Are Cognac and Armagnac the same thing?

Although we could describe these two brandies as brothers, the truth is that cognac and its big brother, Armagnac, have several differences.

Firstly, the localities from which their names originate, although part of the same region, are 300 km apart. This makes the qualities of their soil considerably different. While the soils of Armagnac are fine quartz sand, siliceous clay and river sediments, the soil of Cognac is mostly limestone.

Although you can find versions of both eaux-de-vie made from the same grapes, Cognac is made almost exclusively from ugni-blanc, while Armagnac has a wider variety, such as Bacho, Colombard or Folle Blanche.

Although the alcoholic content of both drinks is also generally similar, ranging around 70 proof, the distillation process is also quite different. Armagnac is distilled only once, in an apparatus called “alambique continuo armagnacais”, while cognac is distilled twice in an apparatus called “alambique charentais”.

The last major difference between these brothers is their consumption. Traditional armagnac, with a long history in France, is a family-produced drink for local consumption, while cognac is mass-produced for export around the world.

Although less well known, Armagnac is of no lesser quality than its popular sibling. In fact, it is a regular ingredient in the French culinary tradition.
